Analysis & Discussion For Political Uncertainty
I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life *were* fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe. - M. Cole

I am glad that you found this amusing.
If you had ANY idea what socialism really means you would not be laughing.
Let me give you a little background. I am Russian. For 15 years of my life I was forced to study Marxism-Leninism. I had to pass exams on that subject in order to graduate high school and enter the university. I recognize Marxists immediately because I know them way too well. I saw too many of them and had to deal with them on the daily basis for 30 years. That’s why I am here, in the US. There is no doubt to anybody who ever read Capital or Communist Manifest that Obama is a Marxist.
Let me tell you one more thing. Every country in the world that ever tried socialism failed miserably. What in the world makes you think that it will work in the United States?
For people like this comedian it is funny to entertain the crowd. For people like me who experienced it firsthand it’s horrifying. That’s why 85% (yes, 85%) of Russians in America will be voting against Obama. That does not necessarily mean that they like McCain, but the perspective of building one more socialist society is unbearable.
I can tell you more about my experience if you are interested.

I understand your concerns – especially living under the Russian style of socialism where it was not the whole of society that benefited, but rather the interests of the small bureaucratic clique who led a parasitic existence on the backs of the working class, and on the back of the nationalized, planned economy.
Personally, I do not believe Barack Obama is promoting socialism, but even if he were, it is highly doubtful he could put it into place within the 8 (possible) years of his term. Moreover, if the American people saw this was truly his goal, they would most certainly replace him at the end of 4 years.
The thing that concerns me is that capitalism isn’t working either. It engenders greed, selfishness, and egotism. In a profit-making society, people will do anything to get ahead and/or make a few (more) bucks. It is capitalism that has put us into the economic crisis we are experiencing today.
I don’t know the answer. I wish I did. It would be nice if some genius came along with a workable compromise. I guess we can always dream.

I have to tell you that there is no “Russian” style socialism, or “Cuban” style – it might look different, but the idea is the same – take from those who work and distribute to all. In reality, of course, party leaders got more, but those who did not work got enough as well. So the wealth is redistributed across the whole society. So what Obama is proposing is “wealth redistribution”, which will be implemented by taking from those who work and pay taxes to those who does not pay taxes and/or does not work. I am not saying that it is a full blown socialism, but it is definitely the second serious step in its direction. I said “second” because the first step was taken when mortgage companies in the mid-90s started giving loans to people (who were not qualified and did not deserve to have these loans) only because the government wanted everybody to be “equal” despite their ability to pay. This is a 100% socialistic idea and of course, as all other socialistic ideas, it failed. So it is not capitalism that put us into this economic crisis, but socialism. And this was just a first attempt. Can you imagine what’s going to happen to this country if someone (in this case Obama) starts methodically implementing it step by step? You are saying that people will replace him in 4 years? By that time there will be no freedom of speech (look at those lawsuits in government agencies already piling up to shut down the TV ads against him). This is the first case in the history of this country when the free speech is being subjected to the government control. And as far as his real goals go – we don’t really know what they are. But I do know who his teacher was. The guy who was a member of the Communist Party of the United States supported by Moscow. Check out this link and also his own book (in the second edition he removed all mentioning about this guy)

I agree with you that the side effect of capitalism could “engender greed, selfishness, and egotism” as you said. But the basic ideas of individual achievement, excellence, individual responsibility, respect for entrepreneurship are the ones that drive the economy and prosperity. Do you know what is the most dangerous thing that will happen to people after 4(8) years of freeloading? That these people will never going to work again. Why would they? And they will start demanding more and more. And you (and I) will have to deliver more and more.
And finally – I think that overall Americans are very naive. Even in your message you wrote something to the effect like “nothing like this would ever happen”. Russian people were also very naive in 1917. Furthermore, a lot of very smart and educated people were saying: well, communists are not going to do bad things, they just want to feed the hungry. Only after 40 million of them died in Siberia and the country was destroyed, they realized what happened. Of course, it took some time for communists to achieve all this, but after the first couple of years the process became irreversible. So be careful, very careful who you are going to vote for on Nov. 4th.
