According to our illustrious POTUS, we are in a toilet-flushing crisis.
With impeachment breathing down his neck and countless domestic and international crises to consider, Donald Trump recently took on a pressing enemy: toilet flushing.
“People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times as opposed to once. They end up using more water.”
While his point seemed to be related to relaxing water-conservation standards, one cannot help but snicker at his comments (along with noting the distraction value of his concern).
Trump added that the government is investigating this urgent issue … and they are also “looking very strongly at sinks and showers.”

What gets me is no matter what he says, his listeners eat it up for no other reason than they happen to be in the presence of the (taking a reverential breath) current P.O.T.U.S.!

Sigh. For a country that claims to be the land of the free, you’re very regulated, and perhaps specifics about how much water can be used in a single flush is one of them. When I visited the US, one of the things I noticed was how full of water the typical toilet bowl appeared to be. Even, if when flushing, it was replaced by no more water that it previously contained, I suspect more water would be used than in a typical Kiwi loo.
I also noticed that very few toilets had a full flush and half flush option – something that is almost standard (but no compulsary) here. Of course that might have changed in the intervening years since I last visited America, but the number of comments I see on travel blogs by Americans about the oddity of seeing two flush buttons in NZ toilets, would seem to indicate it is still relatively rare there.
As to Trump’s ability to comprehend even the basics of conservation let alone the water cycle, he appears to be lacking any ability at all. The picture conjured up by his comment that he and his cronies are “looking very strongly at sinks and showers, and other elements of bathrooms” is rather humorous, but perhaps he can do less harm with that than with many of the other things he’s looked at during his time as POTUS.

I’m not sure about that “regulated” part. As far as I know, there are no laws telling me to flush.
However, if you are buying a toilet, you can only buy what the stores sell. I don’t know if there are regulations on what stores can sell.

According to the Guardian Article Nan linked to, the Energy Policy Act, passed in 1992, limits the amount of water used per flush to 1.6 gallons. Whether you like it or not, that is being regulated. In this particular case, it appears to be a regulation on the installation of new toilets.

Hello Barry. I have dual flush toilets in our home and they work fine. However it is not just the water in the bowl and tank that determine how well a toilet will flush but the piping the toilet leads into. If the pipes are narrowed or encrusted with debris from things already sent down the pipes, or if the pipes are not sloped correctly , then the toilets will have trouble emptying the bowl regardless of water amount. Precisely. It’s not the amount of water per se that’s the issue. It’s the design and engineering of the whole system. If regulations limit the amount of water per flush on new installations, then it make sense to install a toilet that is designed to work with that amount of water. I think that concept is beyond Trump’s ability to grasp.

Sort of, Mak. He considers himself so “bigly smart,” yet he’s totally unable to speak coherently. In more cases than not, he doesn’t have a CLUE about the subject matter … but will ramble on and on in an effort to sound like he’s an expert.
Yes, the actual topic was related to water conservation which, because he’s against the effects of climate change, he had to ramble on about the number of times a person might need to flush a toilet to prove his point.
