Eating Ourselves to Extinction

Following are excerpts from a disturbing article in The Guardian:

Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world’s foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilisation.

… the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.

Many scientists believe the world has begun a sixth mass extinction, the first to be caused by a species – Homo sapiens.

Also  … while many of us know the migrant caravan from So. America is due to violence, killings, and organized crime within those countries, another article in The Guardian points out it also has to do with climate change. According to Robert Albro, a researcher at the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University: “The main reason people are moving is because they don’t have anything to eat.”

Sobering thoughts.  Yet those who could do something to alter our course … choose to do nothing.

  1. They choose to do nothing, as long as they have everything they want–right now! The worst part is, what they most want, is money–and you cannot eat it. It has absolutely no worth or value, and yet it is the most prized possession under our sun. We took a wrong turn a long long time ago, when we took something of no worth and made it valuable. It was such an unnoteworthy invention we have no idea who invented it, like we have no idea who invented the wheel. The wheel at least has value, money does not. Why are we such fools? We cannot eat god, or gold, or government! Yet those are the three main pursuits of humanity. No other species has these, to the best of our knowledge, why do we? We think we are the smartest species on this earth. I suggest we are the stupidest!

      • The models of modern warfare are completely changing. Now it’s digital and it’s weather warfare. Just starve your enemy out and ruin their economy in the process. A recent political tactic is when the global elite can’t get themselves, or their representatives, elected, just flood a target country with immigrants from failing countries.

        • I would put your comments under the category of ‘Conspiracy Theory’.

Conspiracy theories tend to give these state actors far more credit for their competence than they actually possess. Given the choice between incompetence and conspiracy theory to explain any event I will inevitably chose incompetence as the better explanation.

In any case climate affects the whole world so any government seeking to manipulate it would suffer consequences in their own country.

          • Of course, you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s a conspiracy theory to you and understandably so since it all seems so implausible, but then again you have no direct personal experience to base that on. As for countries suffering the consequences of their own actions, these very same countries are run by people who do not necessarily have allegiance to their own country (think: fascism). Look what European leaders have done to their countries with immigration, for example.

            • Remember the mustard gas of the first world war? Once you release it, you cannot control where it goes. If you are right about your theory, then humanity has not learned a thing. You do not use weapons that can bite your own ass! And if you do, you deserve to get what you wanted to give.

      • Curious … why do you think this?

IMO, the current generation … and most likely a few beyond … may not notice much, but minus a nuclear attack or meteor or other people-destroying catastrophe, there is a plethora of scientific evidence that indicates future humans will suffer from diminished food supply. Much of it by their own making, but climate change will also account for some of it (note remarks by Dr. Albro in post).

          • And to you, chija, you are more than willing to create problems and let your descendents solve them, because you know they will develop new technologies. They will have to exist before they can undo your dirty work. And if they cannot eat, or breathe, just how will they do that?
Planned extinction, have we really lived millions of years just to come to this end? Planned extinction! For you I hope there is an etefnal hell!

  2. The fact that the gap between rich and poor is widening everywhere, each and every year with the gap currently at its highest level in decades, and the negligence of our leaders to confront environmental problems, even though many other serious issues exist I believe these two are the most urgent factors that will negatively affect everybody, and it is the writing on the wall.

    Very interesting post.

  3. All this isn’t really too difficult or mysterious to comprehend and formulate immediate and mid-term (some long-term) solutions to decelerate and avoid these Homo sapien caused consequences. The facts and stats are very real and supported by more facts and stats — going on for several decades back over a century to the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. In several ways even beyond that. But sadly we have two major problems that can make the 6th Extinction Event come to fruition:

    1. — Too many Homo sapiens self-absorbed in ego and self-preservation and excessive self-gain (and waste) that MIGHT extend to their family unit and to a lesser extent immediate close community(?). This is one horrible trait we’ve inherited from our primate ancestors.

    2. — Over 5.98 billion Homo sapiens believe in an “all-powerful” divine Deity that has planned this extinction from the beginning of time and as long as that same vast majority of defeatist humans naively concede/believe that as unchangeable, unavoidable, hell… even WANT to help usher in that extinction event soon (the sooner the better), we have a battle/war with very shitty odds of winning.

I really, REALLY hope I am wrong. BELIEVE ME I hope I am wrong! :/

  4. I just heard the other day that we have 12 years to reverse the global warming phenomenon before it becomes an unstoppable runaway train. I haven’t looked into that yet for verification, but just thought I’d throw some fuel on your fire Nan 🙂

If that is true, we are borked. Screwed. FUBAR. Stick a fork in us done. Know why? Because in 12 years we could not convince the alt right herd that facts are real. We are doomed to teh stoopid.

    • Actually, the scientific studies I’ve seen support a mini-ice age coming. Regardless, there’s very little man can do to alter the equation because it’s driven my natural cycles of the sun.

        • Not exactly like religion, though.

The terms global warming and climate change are used interchangeably by many, but there is a distinction. First came the Global Warming Theory which was the brainchild of French scientist Claude Allegre. Note: Allegre has since renounced his own theory. Al Gore took up the global warming cause with his infamous hockey stick slide which showed that increased levels of carbon dioxide threaten man’s very existence. Of course, carbon dioxide is actually essential for the survival of the species. Senator James Inhofe, who twice chaired the U.S. Senate Committee of Environment and Public Works, came out against global warming and even published a book entitled, “The Global Warming Hoax: How The Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future.” In recent years, the term global warming has fallen out of favor due to pushback that it can’t be scientifically proven. Instead, the term has been replaced with the term “climate change” which is a much broader and more generic term. If you have an open mind, I suggest you read an article from Newsmax at the following link:

The Guardian article about the loss of animal species placed the blame at the feet of the destruction of nature and the loss of ecosystems which support the world food supply. Yes, the loss of ecosystems is now being adversely affected by droughts which are occurring all over the world. Yes, those droughts are, in part, man-made. That much is true, though, woefully incomplete at best. However, the main cause of those droughts isn’t the seven billion people living on the planet. The droughts are caused by a group of people who seek to control the world through controlling the weather. In this country, there are public documents showing that the U.S. government (just one of many governments) seeks to control the weather and why.

            • Ahhh yes. I’ve heard about this stuff from time to time. I suppose it COULD be happening via the government, but I guess I’m like many, many others and see it as nothing but a heretofore unproven (conspiracy) theory.

According to what I read, computer models to simulate the possible implications of different technologies related to controlling earth’s climate have so far shown little success … and even some potential disastrous results. As one article stated, these theories have long been regarded as the most bizarre of all solutions for global warming.

The Britannica site says this: To some scientists, global-scale geoengineering proposals border on science fiction. Geoengineering is also controversial because it aims to modify global climate—a phenomenon that is not yet fully understood and cannot be altered without risk.

Certainly it would be beneficial to humans if we had the ability to control not only our weather, but various circumstances in our daily lives as well. But alas. So far we’ve been unsuccessful. *sigh*

              Thanks for your input.

P.S. My other-half was in the Air Force and he says the “chem-trails theory” is a bunch of hooey.

            • Your brother who was in the Air Force. Wow, what an answer! By that logic, you should agree with me because I was first put on to the whole chemtrails issue by my uncle who was a pilot in the Air Force. The ultimate test, though, is to just go outside and look up in the skies. Anybody, if they know what they’re looking for, can see the planes spraying. Never found anyone who couldn’t see it. Just try it. You might even agree with my uncle, then. Also, thought you might like this article from Natural News (see link below).

            • HA! Funny that you picked up on only the P.S. … which I mainly included as an afterthought. BTW, my “other-half” is my life’s partner (male).

But in relation to your comments/beliefs about the chem-trails — yes, I’ve seen them, although very, very seldom. Apparently, they are much more common in metropolitan areas. In any case, as I previously indicated, along with many others I tend to take the idea with a grain of salt. Besides, from what I’ve read, at this point it’s only a theory.

Having said that … if you feel the evidence is valid, then as a non-scientist, who am I to tell you otherwise?

            • Addendum: In the Newsmax article, the following statement was made: [Y]ou will never look at government officials the same way . . . you will never trust what you hear in the media again . . . in fact, you will become skeptical of any and all authority figures going forward.

I don’t have to read the paper mentioned in the article to feel this way. 😉 Most of us already know there is a certain element in our society that has a LOT more influence on what makes the world tick than we’re aware of. Actually, our current Leader is demonstrating this daily on a small scale.
