The Need to Believe

You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence,  it’s based on a deep-seated need to believe.

–Carl Sagan

Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

  1. Thank you, this will speed up my intention to read more of Carl Sagan than only his description of our world, being a pale blue dot in the universe. Sagan didn’t need to have a PhD in philosophy, he was a philosopher himself.

  2. “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge — even to ourselves — that we’ve been so credulous. “

  3. It’s tough to find anything to disagree with there. Sagan, and his Cosmos, probably helped to steer me on the right direction in my youth.

As an adult I had the pleasure of the other Cosmos, and NDT is hard to beat as our modern Sagan.
